"The Caribbean nation of Haiti has been hit by its strongest earthquake in more than 25 years, causing what is being described as "a catastrophe of major proportions".

The earthquake had a preliminary magnitude of 7.0 and a depth of 8km, and was centred about 15km west of the capital Port-au-Prince, according to the US Geological Survey.

Those of you with work benefits, ask your company to match your donations. They usually have a program that allows them to donate to any non-profit organizations.

"Ottawa will match, dollar for dollar, any donations made through CANADIAN registered charities."
